Last night, 15 May 2014, Andre Petim was named Sportsman of the Year for Ajax Cape Town at the Crystal Towers Hotel in Century City.
The 28-year-old professional footballer from Edgemead was unsuspecting when he received the award for the first time.
“It was a big surprise and I am grateful that they saw my contribution,” Petim said.
One of the reasons why Petim did not expect to win the award was because he had injured himself in the last season, tearing everything in his ankle.
The Sportsman of the Year Award was one of four awards that were given out last night.
Andre Petim began his career 14 years ago playing for the football club, Vasco Da Gama when he was just 15-years-old. This was done under the influence of his father who also used to play for the club. He was encouraged to participate in the sport along with his two brothers. Shortly after he was scouted by Ajax Cape Town just across the road from where he played and has been playing for them ever since. Today his brothers no longer play for Vasco Da Gama but still hold positions as shareholders in the club.
Petim’s success can be contributed to his diligent practice routine. He believes every game is important and one has to be well prepared for it.
“Sometimes we practice seven days a week and twice a day,” he said.
Andre Petim who was accompanied by his wife at the cocktail event last night would like to thank everyone for their support and believes that he could not have done it without them.
