Brazilians claim Portuguese citizenship

Here in South Africa, the Portuguese community are very proud of their heritage. They have their own clubs, uphold the Portuguese language and celebrate cultural events.

It seems that Portuguese descendants in Brazil are following suit by trying to claim Portuguese nationality.

Why are they doing this? It seems that most of them believe that by doing so, they will be able to get a better tertiary education or possibly a better job.

In this year alone, 7500 Portuguese passports were expedited in São Paulo by the consulate. Also, in the last five years, 30000 new nationalities have been issued.

“I have taken Portuguese nationality as I think it could mean I get a better education – maybe a better job. I think it is a pretty country and I would like to visit it one day,” said a “new Portuguese” citizen.
