Carnation Revolution remembered

This year, we as South Africans have prided ourselves in displaying 20 years of democracy in our country. Some might not know this, but we share our democracy with Portugal this year, as they celebrate 40 years of democracy.

Back in 1974, one of the most peaceful revolutions in history took place on the 25th of April.

There is a debate whether any shots were fired during this revolution as some say there were not while others say four people were shot by the PIDE secret police.

The uprising saw peaceful participants trying to overthrow the dictatorial rule by throwing red carnations down the barrels of soldier’s guns.

Today, the flower is still symbolic of the Carnation Revolution which will always be associated with bringing freedom to Portugal.
