Day 19 – La Portela de Valcarce to Triacastela (35,5km)

Contentment is the reward of being appreciative and grateful. It goes that if you are grateful in every situation, you will be happy with everything and your happiness will be abundant and boundless – Clement Getate

What happens when you press the sleep button on your phone’s alarm several times? We woke up an hour later than planned this morning but myself and Odette both agreed that it was absolutely perfect.

We had another walk of 35km today to complete a hatrick of our last 3 days of walking. It was to be another beautiful day in the mountains and pilgrims all around. We have noticed the increase in the number of pilgrims as we get closer to Santiago de Compostela.

The first 15km walk was a tough climb all the way to our lunch destination, O’Cebreiro. It was again very hot and dusty, fortunately every now and then the good Lord would blow a breath of fresh air. We finished lunch at 16h00 and still had 21km to walk. We were blessed as most of the walk was downhill and the views impeccable.

We came across, for the first time on our walk, an Antonio Banderas lookalike on a horse. It was straight out of the movies and I had to remind Odette that she was a married woman! It’s quite funny as about two hours later a cow crossed our path and she looked the other way.

We arrived at our destination, Triacastela just after 21h00. We have been so blessed with accommodation; it really helps in recovering from a tough day.

We are on track with our target of doing the 33 day walk in 23 days. After today’s walk we have approximately 120km to go over the next 4 days.

God bless
