Manny de Freitas dressed in traditional Madeiran attire at SONA

DA Shadow Minister of Transport and Political Head for Johannesburg South, Manny de Freitas attended this year’s SONA (State Of the Nation Address) dressed in traditional Madeiran garb. De Freitas is a descendent of parents from Madeira, a Portuguese autonomous region comprising an archipelago of islands off the coast of Morocco.

This was a first for the South African Parliament. The majority of the Portuguese community in South Africa originate or are descendent from Madeira.

De Freitas’ attire demonstrated our rainbow nation which includes immigrants and their descendants from all over the world. De Freitas said that his love and appreciation of his cultural roots takes nothing away from his patriotism for South Africa, just like the love for one’s father takes nothing away for the love of one’s mother.
