The death of a second Portuguese bullfighter in the space of just two weeks even made mentions in international press this week, as the association of ‘forcados’ (fighters who taunt the bull with their bare hands) called for “more respect” for their roles in the bloodsport, and “more medical resources in bullrings”.

Fernando Quintela, 26, died last Friday, two weeks after Pedro Primo, 25, was killed in Cuba (Alentejo).

Both young men were accomplished ‘forcados’ and died from injuries received in the ring.

Agronomy engineer Quintela’s death was featured in the UK Independent which claimed he died after being “trapped between the bulls horns and tossed onto the floor of the bullring in Lisbon”.
