Filipa Barroso is Miss World Portugal 2017

The town of Batalha saw the crowning of a new Portuguese beauty queen during the weekend. The rather quiet town of 15, 000 is best known for its centuries old monastery and its proximity to the breathtaking Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros played host to an event that selected Portugal’s rep not only to Miss World but also to Miss Supranational, Miss International and other minor pageants.

With a total of 18 contestants, the Miss Portuguesa 2017 pageant elected Filipa Barroso as its winner thereby earning her the right to represent Portugal at the Miss World 2017 pageant which will be co-hosted by Singapore and Sanya, China.

Portugal is yet to win the Miss World crown. The country’s highest placement is 2nd runner-up by Ana Paula de Almeida in 1971. So far it has been the only time that Portugal made it to the semis although in 2012, Melanie Vicente was named as one of the Top 30 finishers.

On the same pageant, Priscila Alves has been named as Miss Supranational Portugal. She is the second runner-up. The Miss Supranational 2017 pageant will be co-hosted by Poland and Slovak Republic with the finals set on December 1. Portugal has recorded a lone placement at the pageant when Olivia Ortiz placed as one of the Top 20 in 2010.

Flying soon to Tokyo meanwhile is Ana Marques. She was named Miss International Portugal 2017. Portugal is relatively successful at the pageant having posted one victory in 1996 through the spectacular performance of Fernanda Alves
