“Gates of Heaven” restored


It is a big day today for many in Ponta Delgada as they will be attending the rededication of the historic Sahar Hassamain Synagogue.

Many political representatives, dignitaries and private citizens will be attending after a 30 year struggle to save the Synagogue. The name, Sahar Hassamain means “Gates of Heaven” in Hebrew and now boasts a museum and library dedicated to upholding historic memories of Jewish -Azorean cultural life during the centuries.


Some of the guest speakers that will be making an appearance today include, José Carp, president of the Jewish Community of Lisbon; Tzipora Rimon, Portuguese ambassador to Israel, US Ambassador Robert Sherman and Ponta Delgada Mayor José Bolieiro.

It is said that Jewish presence in Portugal dates back to 2000 years and that 19.8 percent of the Portuguese population have Jewish ancestry.
