Good news for grandchildren of Portuguese expats who would like to keep their Portuguese roots.
These grandchildren are now able to apply for citizenship according to the newly amended Nationality Law. The Nationality Law was approved by Parliament just yesterday and takes effect immediately.
This means that if a grandchild has at least one grandparent of Portuguese nationality, they will be allowed to apply for citizenship.
The amendment is also retroactive, which means that this applies to grandchildren who have already been born abroad before the law was instated.
All that is left to do is to declare that you want to be Portuguese and register your birth in any Portuguese civil registry.
