Just like father like son, the same holds true for mother and daughter and Jadee Fernandes is proof of this.

“My mom and dad inspired me to start this business, so it is a family business,” Jadee explains as she talks about her company, Watermelon.

Her mother has been in the corporate gifting industry for over 20 years and she says she has learnt all she knows from her.

She started Watermelon in 2007 and just did promotional clothing and gifts which they call merchandise. It was not long till the company began to branch out in other avenues, and soon they started doing events in 2012. This Jadee says, has all been credited to word of mouth.

In 2014, they started doing international weddings as well, splitting the company into three divisions merchandise, events and weddings.  So far, they have worked with big names such as Sunglass Hut, Luxottica Group, Havaianas and other large corporate companies.

“Business is stressful and the hours are long. I always have last minute deadlines so I don’t always have time to do my hobbies and my phone is always on,” she laughed.

When she does get that rare moment to breathe, she does yoga, goes to gym, relaxes at Langaro Lifestyle, takes her Pomeranian dogs for walks on the promenade and has recently taken up diving at Sea Point swimming pools.

To Jadee, there is nothing more important than customer service, “I am all about my clients and service. It’s a privilege to deal with them all, my business is my life,” she said.

Having a Portuguese father, she has tried to stay close to her roots and says that the Portuguese Club makes the most amazing Milho and she tries to go whenever she can.

Looking to the future, she would like to focus on the wedding division of her company and dreams of visiting Madeira and Greece again soon.
