We all love the American singer and songwriter, Katy Perry, with her striking blue eyes and jet black hair; she really is the American dream girl. Or is she?
While she might be famous for being a Californian girl, her roots tend to drift a little further, as far as Europe actually.
On 25 October 1984, Katy Perry was born as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson. So where did the Perry surname come from? Well, Perry is actually her mother’s maiden surname that she adopted for the stage. Perry is the Anglicization of Pereira, a common Portuguese surname which translates as “pear tree”.
“The Perry branch of her family is of Portuguese origin (more specifically, Azorean) […] Three of her great-great-grandparents hailed from the Azores and it’s Horta that gets the bragging rights for her Perry origins” wrote the Huffpost.
Apart from her Portuguese roots, she is also part Irish, English and German.
