Medieval Portugal a tourism attraction

With the arrival of spring and during the summer, Medieval Fairs and Historical Recreations are performed in several towns throughout Continental Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.

The calendar of tributes to the Middle Ages starts as early as March in the Castle of Montemor with the Medieval Combat World Championship and continues with fairs and markets, such as Torres Novas, Alhos Vedros, Viana do Castelo, Vila da Feira, Mochico and Silves just to name a few major enactments of the Golden Age of Chivalry.

Visitors can experience recreations and activities as they may have happened centuries ago with veiled dancers, snake charmers, jugglers, acrobats, and noblemen and ladies parading in their finest costumes. Regional foods and beverages are available in a medieval atmosphere at number inns and taverns.

Christian knights and Moorish warriors re-enact combats with the background of real castles and palaces where these episodes of history have actually taken place.

Medieval markets as other similar initiatives try to recreate epochs, experiences, facts and personages of the history of Portugal. These historical events are temporarily staged back to the middle Ages and at the times of the Portuguese Discoveries.

The country fairs and markets try to portray the arts and crafts of medieval period and locations, showing traditions while recreating in a very visual and entertaining manner of the daily lives of artisans, merchants and craftsmen of centuries ago.

These celebrations include Combat Tournaments, on foot and on horseback and medieval theatres with court jesters, acrobats and dancers. Medieval markets have also a very strong gastronomic component, since the presence of taverns is a constant, where you can enjoy various dishes from the region.

The medieval music performances are also a main feature that captivates and enriches every corner of the markets, for enjoyment of visitors, who sit at the table of the hostelries or passing travellers visiting inns and drinking saloons.

These initiatives aim to be spaces of conviviality and animation, created with the objective to give resident public and tourists an image of habits and customs characteristic of the Middle Ages.

Some of these historical enactments involve hundred of participants dressed in regalia from the times of legendary Kings and Queens.

The growing popularity of the Medieval Fairs contributes to enrich the Portuguese tourist attractions while portraying regional traditions and personalities, based on actual episodes and documentation of the history of Portugal.

Com a chegada da Primavera e ao longo de todo o Verão , vão-se realizando em diversas localidades, de Norte a Sul de Portugal continental, na Madeira e nos Açores , Feiras Medievais e Recriações Históricas.

Os Mercados Medievais como outras iniciativas do género tentam recriar épocas, vivências, factos e personagens da História de Portugal.

De modo muito particular as Celebrações Medievais  são  localizadas temporalmente na Idade Média e  na época dos Descobrimentos.

Nessas iniciativas também se tentam retratar as artes e ofícios das populações de cada tempo e lugar, permitindo apreciar tradições recriadas  de uma forma muito visual e atrativa onde estão presentes nesta festas artesãos, mercadores, regatões e artífices.

Estas celebrações incluem Torneios de Combate a pé e a cavalo e teatros Medievais com os bobos, saltimbancos e dançarinos.

Os Mercados Medievais tem, também, uma componente gastronómica muito forte, já que a

presença de tavernas é uma constante, nas quais onde se pode disfrutar de várias iguarias oriundas da região.

A música medieval com a sua característica de festa, cativa e enriquece todos os recantos, entusiasmando aqueles que, à mesa ou de passagem, ficam contagiados pela energia que conseguem transmitir.

Esta iniciativa pretende ser um espaço de animação e convívio, criado com o objetivo de dar a conhecer ao público residente e aos turistas hábitos e costumes caraterísticos da Idade Média.

Tem como objetivo principal enriquecer o roteiro turístico Português   e retratar acontecimentos ou tradições de caráter local ou regional, fundamentados em documentação ou outros elementos da história de Portugal .
