The Indictment papers issued by the Portuguese Public Prosecutor with charges against Jose Socrates, former prime minister from 2005 to 2011, add up to four thousand pages, which reading material equivalent to ten Jules Verne visionary books or the scripts of entire Star Wars movies.

The defence team already advised this week that it needs at least one year to analyse and study the lengthy document.

This means that the trial will only begin in 2019 and may last up to five years or even more.

The investigation by Portuguese justice, under the code name “Operação Marquês” involves various previous government cabinet Ministers, the Portuguese largest private sector and state-owned banks, Banco Espirito Santo and Caixa Geral de Depositos and the national telecommunications company Portugal Telekom.

The code name “Marques”, adopted by the judiciary police, relates to a residential address of the former Prime Minister.

The evidence to support the indictment and criminal prosecution was issued after a four-year inquiry accuses Mr Socrates of receiving millions of Euros in a scheme involving the former heads of Espirito Santo bank and Portugal Telecom.

Banco Espirito Santo which was the largest financial institution in Portugal ceased to exist, inflicting billions of Euros in losses on taxpayers and shareholders, a great percentage of which were Portuguese immigrants.

State owned Caixa Geral de Depositos, which was one of the leading European banks was also negatively affected by mismanagement and unprofessional conduct, becoming virtually bankrupted and needing massive cash injection from government coffers, sacrificing Portuguese taxpayers.

The plot of government of Socrates governance corruption saga reads like a romance or television series graft thriller.

In the meanwhile the Portuguese shareholders, investors and taxpayers have found out that corruption in large scale and state capture by some finance groups, also happens in one the most civilised regions of the World like Europe.
