We have all seen the horrific scene of an elderly person in hospital who has one foot in the grave. Some of them prefer to have their death assisted; this is more formally known as euthanasia.

Many people and nations are on the fence regarding this but France has decided to allow an option for a “deep continued sedation”. This got the bandwagon going for Portugal to also endorse the deep sleep. When going for deep sedation, the patient will be in a long state of unconsciousness and will not be able to feel any pain. Of course, the patient has to give consent before this is allowed.

There is no reason they can’t do this. But most patients are not properly informed about this possibility and so it is usually a family member who has to decide”, Rui Nunes.
