History of Portuguese Rugby


When one thinks of Portugal as a sporting nation, we know how crazy they are when it comes to soccer. However, not much attention has been given to their rugby team which has been in existence since 1935. In April of 1935, they played their first match against Spain.

These days The Portugal national rugby union team or Os Lobos (The Wolves) as they are known take part in the European Nations Cup and IRB Nations Cup.

In 2007, they qualified for the first time to partake in the Rugby World Cup along with teams such as New Zealand, Italy, Romania and Scotland.


The team has continued to up their game and in the 2003–04 European Nations Cup, rose victorious to be the winners.

The Portuguese also boast their own sevens team known as the Portugal national rugby union team. They played their first game in 1992 at the  Catania Stevens. The team take part in games such as the World Sevens Series, the European Rugby Cup Sevens and the Rugby World Cup Sevens.
