Portugal’s Big Brother

It looks like Portual will be getting tighter security, especially in areas stretching from Bairro Alto to Cais do Sodré.

This was announced by Urban Hygiene Councillor, Duarte Cordeiro in a meeting after the Lisbon council favoured this idea.

The security idea comes in the form of spreading CCTV cameras throughout the allocated areas.

It seems like something out of George Orwell’s 1948 science fiction Novel, 1984. If you’re not sure what I am talking about, then allow me to educate you. This is where the concept of “Big Brother is watching you” comes from.

But many cities around the world have followed this route. Even Cape Town has surveillance cameras throughout the central business district.

The councillor continued to say that he was well aware of what was happening in his old neighbourhood and that drinking on the streets at night and activities in bars would be monitored.
