Prisoners in Portugal are waiting with bated breath on their president, Aníbal Cavaco Silva. Why is it you ask? Well, the Christmas amnesty is in its final phase and 1200 prisoners have submitted requests to have their sentences lifted.
According to an official, most of the requests have come from the high-security prison, Paços de Ferreira.
Last year, the Portuguese president pardoned two applicants out of 251 requests. One was a jail sentence and the other happened to be an expulsion order. The reason provided for these amnesties were humanitarian factors and reintegration into society.
This annual tradition is reviewed on the basis of written opinions from judges, prison directors and proposals from the ministry of justice as well as reports from prison directors.
