Senhora do Amparo is one of the venerated saints of the Madeira Islands that is celebrated, in a particularly festive and ceremonial way in the island and among Portuguese communities around the world.
The Portuguese community of Cape Town commemorated this particularly special date last Sunday with a religious ceremony at the Associação Portuguesa do Cabo da Boa Esperança , followed by a lively fair with traditional food, music, crafts and dancing .
The festival featured performances from the musical band Kanimambo, other local artists and folklore groups
Hundreds visitors enjoyed a multiple choice of traditional culinary treats , like “milho frito” ,”dobrada à Santos “ and refreshing beverages such as “poncha”.
Once again a special praise is due to Carlos Aguiar, one of genuine leaders of the Portuguese Community, and to the group “Amigos Portugueses”, who must be congratulated for the hard work of coordinating this festive event.
