They might have lost their Portuguese top-flight clash with Benfica over the weekend, but South African football fans were less worried about Vitoria Guimaraes’ result and more keen to see how South African midfielder Thibang Phete performed.
The Kimberley-born midfielder, Thibang Phete, started the match for Vitoria Guimaraes in what was a narrow defeat to 10-man Benfica on Friday evening.
The 22-year-old, who was once on the books of Cape Town National First Division side Milano United, played the full 90 minutes as Guimaraes lost away from home to the Primeira Liga leaders. Phete has now made three starts and five substitute appearances for the first team in this campaign.
Phete comes from the Stars of Africa Academy gin Gauteng and has recently put his hand up in a big way, having started and featured the full 90 minutes in consecutive matches for the first time in his budding career in Europe.
With four games to go, Guimareas are in 11th place and one point above Maritimo who also have a game in hand.
