Not too long ago we did a write up on the Top 10 Things you didn’t know about Portugal!
One of the points in that story was that Portugal has some of the biggest and best waves in the world.

This is where legendary surfer Garrett McNamara set the world record for the largest wave ever surfed. He did this in 2011 off the coast of Portugal, at Nazaré. Well now some daredevil surfers are at it again, in the last week the swells have been massive at the Praia do Norte beach in Nazaré.

The break has become a shrine for big wave surfers ever since McNamara set a world record three years ago by surfing a 78ft wave from trough to crest.

These waves are created when a 200km long underwater canyon combines with strong Atlantic currents.

And the biggest surprise is that the Waves are usually at their peak in the autumn and winter months of the year.

Here are some images of the surfers trying to ride these monster’s, enjoy!
