Tesla, the first mass market production fully-electric vehicle, was officially launched in Portugal last Friday as it began to accept orders from customers from January 27.

US company Tesla Motors is seeking to broaden its market within Europe to expand its distribution and electric car charging network to Southern European countries, such as Portugal, where there is a possibility of installing Gigafactory, lithium-ion battery, factory.

The first commercial successful electric car was developed by the South African business tycoon Elon Musk, who  was born in  Pretoria in 1971 , were he started his studies, before moving with the family to the Far East and eventually settling in the United Sates.

Today, 45 year old Elon Musk is considered a business and scientific genius, who redefined  transportation on earth and space.

The value of his companies, from solar energy, aeronautic industries to electric car production, is estimated by Fortune magazine to be worth over 11,7 billion USD .

The popularity of Tesla has been growing steadily in Portugal, to the point that the owners of the famous vehicle have made a petition to Elon Musk to expand to the country the technical assistance and dealership of the electric car .

According to Tesla Motors, Portuguese customers now have full access for both new Tesla  Model S and Model X, as  deliveries to the country will begin in the second quarter of 2017, while  developing a set-up of  technical assistance dealerships, that in the future may lead to the battery driven vehicles be assembled in Portugal .

Tesla may build a car component and battery factory in Portugal because there are big lithium deposits and good infrastructure .

The new Tesla Crossover model which expects to sell in America 50.000  units, within 6 months, could also be introduced to Portugal soon.

Tesla Motors is simultaneously establishing a network of Superchargers  stations that will provide electric charging for Portuguese  owners which will be open for business starting in the second half of the year.

Tesla will strategically place Superchargers electric car charging stations along well-travelled highways, near hotels, resorts and city centres. The Destination Charging program will begin rolling out in the next weeks.

US car maker Tesla plans to build a Gigafactory in Europe. Portugal wants to host it. There are many arguments in its favor: big lithium deposits and good infrastructure on the ground.
