The history of Banting

the history of banting

Since the Banting diet revolution happened recently, everyone was ranting and raving about it. This also linked Tim Noakes to the low carb diet.

However, the Banting diet has been around long before Noakes and not many of us know this. The Banting diet was first introduced in London in 1861 by a surgeon by the name of William Harvey.

The first person to be the guinea pig to this new diet was an undertaker by the name of William Banting. Hence the name, but we think credit should have gone to the surgeon too, therefore the Harvey/Banting diet sounds more credible.

This diet proved to be popular for a span of almost 100 years before it suddenly fizzled out in 1959. Dietitians and nutritionists then focused more on keeping the heart healthy.
