Vasco da Gama were held to a 1-1 draw by Garankuwa United at Cape Town Stadium on the weekend and now turn their focus to Wednesday’s clash with table toppers Golden Arrows.
Vasco host Arrows at Parow Park at 15h30.
Arrows, coached by ex-Vasco da Gama player Shaun Bartlett, are top of the National First Division log with 23 points from 11 games played. Vasco are placed 7th with 16 points from 11 games.
“We played well (against Garankuwa) but we could not score. We dominated possession and territory, and then they got a lucky penalty,” says Vasco assistant coach Keenin Lesch.
“It looked to us like they took a shot, and the ball hit Nathan (Gertse’s) leg and bounced up onto his arm. They scored from the penalty and we had to chase the game while they sat back.
“Our equalising goal was a good build up involving various players, which ended in Aleni Lebyane scoring from close range with his head.”
The next round of NFD fixtures takes place this midweek, with eight matches spread across Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Playing Arrows at our home base on Wednesday presents a really big game and we hope for an exciting clash. This league is by no means over and there are many teams still in the race,” Lesch continues.
