Vasco end year with a draw

Vasco da Gama were engaged in a Cape Town derby in their final National First Division game of 2015 and drew 1-1 with Cape Town All Stars, ending the year 12th on the 16-team table.

Cape Town All Stars staged a second half come back to earn a share of the spoils at 1-1 at a hot Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

Vasco took a 1-0 lead into the halftime beak after their Uganda forward Ntambi Kirizestom buried a loose ball following a corner kick after 40 minutes. The second half was very intense and symbolised a typical Cape derby. All Stars got back into the game and Sizwe Mdlinzo equalised in the 73rd minute.

Meanwhile Baroka FC had their lead at the top of the NFD table cut to just two points while Mthatha Bucks claimed their first win of the campaign but remain rooted to the bottom of the log.

Baroka were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Cape Town on Saturday and second-placed Witbank Spurs closed the gap with Baroka to within two points thanks to a 1-0 win away against Milano United.

It was a historical day for struggling Mthatha Bucks who defeated the once mighty Moroka Swallows 1-0 at home.

The result sees Bucks move to within two points of second-from-bottom FC Cape Town, while the Birds are just one point further ahead and seemingly in real danger of suffering a second successive relegation.

The NFD continues on the weekend of 9-10 January 2016.
