Vasco go down to the Brazilians

A 1-0 win by Mamelodi Sundowns has ended Vasco da Gama’s Nedbank Cup dream at the semifinal stage of the competition.

National First Division side Vasco da Gama started the game well and put pressure on the big-spending Sundowns team at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday. But Mzikayise Mashaba’s goal separated the two teams.

In the Final, Sundowns will now face Ajax Cape Town who beat SuperSport United in the first semifinal.

It was Cape side Vasco who had the first chance through Ndivwe Mdabuka after 15 minutes. The Vasco midfielder found himself in some space before firing at goal but Kennedy Mweene though was up to the task.

Then Jonathan Armogam and Aleni Lebyane wasted further scoring chances for the Parow based club.

But Vasco should have had the opener in the 56th minute when Armogam found himself with a clear view of goal, but somehow he dragged his effort wide of goal.

Then Mashaba made Vasco pay a few minutes later when he drove in a powerful shot past goalkeeper Steven Hoffman and into the top corner.

In the end, Vasco came up just short as The Brazilians sealed their place in next month’s final which will be played at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in PE on the 16th of May.
